Hippolyta is best known as the queen of the Amazons, whose girdle Heracles had to fetch for his Ninth Labour (The Amazon's Girdle). Another Hippolyta was the daughter of Cretheus who became the wife of Acastus.
The rather impressive name means 'horse releaser' or even 'one born of the stampeding horses', from hippos, 'horse' and luo, 'to release'. This name is just right for the Amazon queen.
