Hippothoüs has a name that is the masculine counterpart of that of Hippothoë. He was the son of
Poseidon and Alope. Apart from having a generally favourable connotation, the name is specifically relevant here since Hippothoüs as a child had been suckled by
wild mares. Moreover, Poseidon was the patron of horses.
