Hydra was a monstrous water serpent with a hound's
body, the offspring of two other monsters,
Typhon and Echidna. It had anything from five to five hundred heads, and was killed by Heracles as his Second Labour (The Hydra of Lerna). Its name merely describes it, since hydra (from hydor, 'water') means 'water serpent'.
