Typhon was a monster, the offspring of Tartarus and Gaia. It was said to have had a hundred burning snake heads ('those of a dreaded dragon') and to speak with both men's and animals' voices. It was eventually overcome by Zeus, who after a few ineffectual lightning-strikes managed to crush it with a mountain.
The creature seems to have had its origin in the god that personified either a volcano or a fierce wind, such as the sirocco. Moreover, and not merely from the similarity of the names, it was sometimes confused with the Python. It seems to be oriental in origin (which is why its name relates to 'typhoon'), although Greek typho, 'to smoke', 'smoulder' seems relevant.
