Phorbas was a Lapith, the son of Lapithes or his son Triopas. He is confused (or identified) with another Phorbas who was the father of Actor. A third Phorbas was a man from Panopeus in Boeotia who used to terrorise travellers by challenging them to box with him and then killing them.

The name may derive from either phorbas, 'feeding', 'giving food' or (more suitably for the third one mentioned) phobos, 'fear'.
