Macris was a daughter of Aristaeüs. She nursed the baby
Dionysus in Euboea, where she had taken him from Thebes or some place further away than this. Hera punished her by driving her from Euboea, and Macris took refuge on the island of Drepane, the home of the Phaeacians. The base of her name seems to be macros, meaning 'long' in space or time, so either 'tall' or 'far off'. The latter would make sense for travels and banishment.
