Mante (or Manto) was a prophetess, the daughter of
Teiresias. She advised the women of Thebes to placate Leto and her children when
Niobe mocked her for having only two children (Apollo and Artemis) when she herself had fourteen (seven sons and seven daughters). Mante's name indicates her role, since it means 'prophetess' (mantis, 'prophet').
