Metapontus was a king of Icaria and the husband of
Theano. His name means 'across the sea', with meta here having the implication of change of place' (as it often did in compound words) and pontos meaning 'sea'. This is a suitable name for the king of an
island that lies to the east of mainland Greece across the Aegean Sea.
