Miletus was a son of
Apollo by one of his mistresses (usually said to be Acacallis), and the founder of the town that bears his name. His name is difficult, and Robert Graves tentatively suggests a meaning 'red earth' (miltos), referring to the fact that Cretans had a complexion that was redder than that of the
Greeks!
