Minyas gave his name to the Minyans, the legendary Greek people who originated in Thessaly. He was the son of
Poseidon (or possibly Aeolus or Chryses) and the father of Alcithoë, Leucippe, Arsippe and Clymene. His name can be related to a number of possible origins: Robert Graves sees him as being a 'moon-man', with his name deriving from mené, 'moon'. This would be for some religious or magical cult of the
moon.
