Mopsus

Mopsus was the name of two seers: the first was the son of Ampyx by the nymph Chloris, and the soothsayer of the Argonauts, the second was the son of Apollo and Manto who with his half-brother Amphilocus founded Mallos in Cilicia (they eventually quarrelled and killed each other).

Their name is not easy to interpret; perhaps it is a distortion of some such word as mochthos, 'toil', 'hardship' or moschos, 'calf (relating to some sacrificial rite). There is no standard Greek word starting mop- or mops-. However, moschos could
