Irene was one of the Hours and the goddess of peace. Her
Roman equivalent was Pax. Irene's name is simply the word for peace, eirene (which spelling is also sometimes used for her name). The modern girl's name Irene was probably inspired by a more recent namesake, real or fictional, than the Greek goddess.
