Iphitus was the name of several characters, including the son of Eurytus, the king of Phocis who entertained
Jason, and a king of Elis. All three (and doubtless others) have a name that is a propitious one meaning 'mighty shield', from iphios, 'mighty' and itys, 'shield'.
