Ischys was the son of Elatus. He loved Coronis at the time when she was pregnant with Asclepius by
Apollo. His name means simply 'strength' (ischys). Robert Graves links the word with ixos, 'mistletoe', which plant was regarded as an all-healer. Asclepius,
of course, was the god of healing.
