Lichas was the herald of Heracles. When he brought a tunic dipped in poison to his master, Heracles flung him from a cliff into the sea (traditionally off north-west Euboea) and Lichas' body became the rock that still bears his name. The actual meaning of his name, or that of the Lichadian Islands, is not clear.
