Nauplius was the name of two men who are sometimes confused. The first was the son of
Poseidon (god of the sea) and Amymone, and a noted early navigator. The second was the son of Clytoneüs and a descendant of Nauplius No. 1. Either way, the name means 'navigator', 'seafarer', from naus, 'ship' and pleo, 'to sail'. Compare
Pleiades.
