Nicostrate was an Arcadian nymph, a daughter of the river Ladon. She bore Evander to Hermes (although already married to Echenus) and went with Evander to Italy where he became a powerful king. She subsequently became Carmenta (whom see). Her name is a nice straightforward propitious one, 'victorious army', from nice, 'victory' and stratos, 'army'.
