Hypsipyle

Hypsipyle was a queen of Lemnos and the daughter of the king, Thoas. In spite of her various adventures (she saved her father when all the other men on the island were killed by the women, and later she was captured by pirates and sold to king Lycurgus) her name seems tu be simply a 'noble' one, meaning 'she of the high gate', from hypsi, 'high' and pyle, 'gate'. The reference is to the high gates of her city. (The name would also, in fact, be suitable for a queen of the Underworld.)
