Procris was the daughter of Erechtheus and the niece of Procne and Philomela. She married Cephalus, and on marrying both she and he took a vow of everlasting faithfulness.
This vow may be expressed in her name, which derives from procrino, 'to choose before others', 'prefer' (pro, 'before' and crino, 'to choose'). Or of course the name could apply to her, meaning 'she who is chosen above others'. The resemblance between her name and that of Procne is curious, and may be significant.
