Python

Python was a monstrous serpent in Delphi. It gave the place its first name, Pytho, allegedly because either its body, or the body of Delphyne (which see), had rotted there beside the sacred spring after it was killed by Apollo. Its name, together with the ancient name of Delphi and the word 'python', thus derives from pytho, 'to rot', 'decay'.
