Thetis, though only a minor sea-goddess (a Nereid), played an important part in many stories. She was brought up by Hera, and was the daughter of Nereus and Doris and, more importantly, the mother of Achilles by Peleus. Her name seems to have the the- root seen also in Theseus and Themis (and also Tethys), so that she could be another 'disposer'.
