Tellus was the Roman earth goddess, the equivalent of the Greek goddess Gaia (or Ge). Her name is simply Latin tellus, 'earth' (used more of the planet than to mean 'land'). This Latin word does not seem to be related to the better-known terra, 'land', yet the Roman goddess was also known as Terra.
