Tisiphone was one of the Furies, with her decidedly 'furious' name meaning 'avenging murder' or 'vengeful destruction'. The two elements in the name are tisis, 'penalty', 'punishment', 'retaliation' and phone, 'murder', 'slaughter'.

Avenging the murder of members of a family was precisely the role played by the Furies or Erinyes, a notable example being the revenge they wrought on Orestes and Alcmeon. The Furies drove these young men insane for having murdered their mothers.
