Podarge was a Harpy who was raped by Zephyrus (the west wind). The result of this union were the two horses, Balius and Xanthus, who were Poseidon's wedding gift to Peleus and Thetis. Podarge's name means either 'bright foot' or 'swift foot', from pous, podos, 'foot' and argos, 'bright', 'swift' (see Argus for the connection between these two senses).
This is of course a suitable name for a fast-moving creature, even though she moved by her wings, not her feet, but perhaps the 'swiftness' refers to the snatching carried out by means of her talons.
