Who's Who in Classical Mythology
Phytalus
Phytalus was an Athenian who welcomed
Demeter
to his house and was given a fig tree by her. This gift lies behind his name, it seems, for phyton means 'plant', and thus Phytalus was a 'planter'. No doubt in time he had a whole orchard of fig trees.
