Poene was a Harpy sent by Apollo to the city of Argos as a punishment for a double murder - of Linus, the baby son of Apollo and
Psamathe, and then of Psamathe herself. Her name expresses her fate, since poine means 'ransom', 'vengeance' and so 'punishment'.
