Laertes was the father of
Odysseus, and himself was the son of Acrisius and Chalcomedusa (or Cephalus and
Procris). His name apparently means '
people urger', from laos, 'people' and an old root er-, 'to urge on'. (His name appears in the Linear Β tablets at Knossos as Law-er-tas.)
