Marpessa was a daughter of Evenus. She was wooed by
Apollo but actually abducted by Idas. If we take marpto, 'to grasp', 'catch' as the basis of her name, then this could refer to either Apollo's unsuccessful attempt to carry her off or Idas' successful one!
