Porphyrion was a giant who fought Hera and Heracles. When he tried to rape Hera, he was killed by
Zeus. His name appears to be a threatening one, from porphyreos, 'purple', 'dark' (originally of the sea), although Pindar called him king of the giants and the 'purple' could indicate royal power.
