Steropes was a Cyclops, the offspring, with Argos and Brontes, of
Uranus and Gaia. His name means 'lightning', or 'stubborn face', or even 'cruel eye' (which might be more fitting), from either sterope or stereos, 'stiff', 'stubborn', 'cruel' and ops, 'eye', 'face'.
